After years of withstanding the harsh cold of winter, the extreme heat of summer as well as the constant attack from gas and diesel fumes the protective finish on gas station canopies eventually wear out.
Our client was concerned with the overall appearance and condition some of their older stores were starting to show including peeling paint and rust stains. National Coating Solutions was brought in to restore these canopies and extend their life cycle for years to come. The key to the successful completion of this project was the extensive prep work that happens before any paint is applied. Making sure that there is a clean sound rust free surface will ensure that there is proper adhesion of the primer and in turn the finish coating. What made this project challenging was the fact that the stores were open and work had to be completed around customers with as little disruption as possible. SCOPE OF WORK:
1. Complete a project survey to determine the best products for this application as well as the best practices for completing the project.
2. Pressure wash entire canopy to remove any loose paint, dirt and or contaminants.
3. Scrape and sand all areas to be painted to ensure proper adhesion.
4. Prime all rust areas.
5. Prime entire canopy with bonding primer.
6. Apply DTM coating to entire canopy to provide a chemical resistant long lasting quality finish.
CHALLENGES:
1. Completing work during open business hours.
2. Canopy finish was in desperate need of attention.
3. Work had to be completed within the predetermined time frame.
4. Gas pumps were open and traffic was a concern.
SOLUTIONS:
1. Creating a plan with the client and crews so that everyone worked together.
2. The most time consuming part of the project was the prep work done to make ready for paint.
3. Through careful planning we were able to determine the most efficient course to completing this project.
4. Communication, between the crews, store and customers, was the key to keeping everyone safe during project completion.
